JOHOR BAHARU: Amari Hotel, which is operated by ONYX Hospitality Group (ONYX), will start its operation by end of this year, Group President and Chief Operating Officer Peter Henley said.

Amari Hotel Johor Baharu is part of the Suasana Iskandar project, a RM500 million comprehensive commercial development being developed by United Malayan Land Bhd (UMLand), as well as a debut for Amari brand in Malaysia.

Henley said once completed, the hotel would provide 242 rooms and suites, apart from meeting rooms, spa and restaurants.

“We are proud with our partnership with UMLand for the first Amari real estate development in Malaysia.

“As a hospitality group based in Thailand, our presence in the neighbouring country can be considered as a success to us,” he told a press conference after the topping-out ceremony for the hotel, here today.

Officiating the ceremony was Johor Domestic Trade, Tourism and Consumerism Executive Committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong.

Also present was UMLand Chairman Tun Musa Hitam and UMLand Group Managing Director Dennis Ng.

Meanwhile, Tee said the state government was confident that the hospitality sector would continue to grow this year in line with a strong demand from tourists visiting Johor.

“The increase in the number of hotels and hotel rooms reflected demands in hotel services in Johor which continue to increase due to the rapid development in the tourism industry and trade activities, especially in Johor Baharu,” he added.

For example, the number of star-status hotels in Johor increased 15.4 per cent to 105 hotels last year from 91 hotels in 2014 while the number of hotel rooms also rose to 13,381 last year from 11,290 in 2014, Tee said.
